Synopsis

Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) is a bank employee unreasonably worker, incredibly friendly, proactive, organized and very timely delivery of assignments. The problem is that Stanley becomes a perfect coward when it comes to confrontations. After one of the worst days of his life, Stanley encounters a strange mask that depicts Loki, the Norse god of mischief. When used, Stanley seems to lose all your inhibitions and fears, while their powers and abilities are intensified and sharpened, so that each time wearing it, we can see a Stanley fun, partying, talkative and even a good dancer. The problems begin when Dorian Tyrel (Peter Greene) a crook and leader of a clan of criminals Edge City, is interested in that mysterious mask that seems to give its owner unimaginable power.


Biography of the Autor


Charles Russell known as Chuck Russell was born on May 9, 1958 in Illinois USA, he graduated from the University of Illinois at Champagne, producer and director, his first produced screenplay, was Dreamscape in1984, with Dennis Quaid. The next years, work on teen films like Body Rock (1984), and Back to School (1986) starring Rodney Dangerfield. Was until  the '80s when Russell took the director's chair with his own screenplay, A Nightmare on Elm Street III (1987), the film was a hit.  In 1688 his movie The Blob was a disappointment and six year later in 1994 he produced The Mask starring for Jim Carrey, the film was a huge hit, in this time earning more than $100 million. After his new succesful reputation in Hollywood, he started working with big names and big budget films such as Eraser (1996) with Arnold Schwarzenegger and others.
Married with Patti Russell, he is a father of Logan Joseph Russell (October 18, 1998) and Riley Ann Russell (March 19, 2000). 









Critical Summary

The action takes place in Edge City, a great American city of fiction, with problems of pollution and crime. Stanley Ipkiss (Carrey) is a bank employee, friendly, shy and timid, who is not successful with women. His boss mistreats. One day he finds mask, god of malice ancestral night, mischief and deceit, who decides to try to see if with its help can overcome shyness and break his bad luck.

The film is an amalgam of genres, short action, comedy, crime, fantasy and romance. This movie explains that between a shy person and a super hero urban nightclub there is only one step, that can be find by his own will or the suggestion of an inert mask. Masked a withdrawn person can become to be tough, brash and combative, strong enough to offer a recital of grimaces, winks and gestures, beyond even the resilience of the viewer.

The story begins by showing the life of Stanley Ipkiss, a bank employee who constantly take the hair and pushed around. That is when, by coincidences of life, Tina appears on the bank where he works for a bank loan. What he does not know is that Tina's intentions go beyond its banking operations, she wants to photograph the bank box safe. Tina is the girl of Dorian Tyrell, a criminal who has the Coco Bongo nightclub he wants to expand his empire and unseat the king of crime in the city of Edge City, Niko. Charlie's friend Ipkiss, he gets tickets to go to Coco Bongo but unfortunately fails to go into the room and stays out. After finishing a day in the worst way possible and made a mess, the end of the day is with a mask of wood floating in the harbor of the city, taking his home, putting it and discovering that he will get a number of specific powers of cartoons. This mask allows Ipkiss make the repressed side of his personality and make it blossom showing as he would like to be.

Jim Carrey is the main protagonist of the film for his role as Stanley Ipkiss, a shy and clumsy to everyone teases but, after putting the mask his personality changes dramatically. Wearing the mask also implies the power to project his own fantasies and manipulate people. Peter Greene is the other side of the coin to play Dorian Tyrell, an unscrupulous type who wants to become the greatest criminal in the city.

The film pays particular attention to relevant characters of the comic world, as Bugs Bunny and others. Includes cartoons and digital animation effects that give the film a unique tone. The work is a dynamic comedy with thrilling moments, which bases the humor in exaggerated changes produced by the use of a mask. It also makes use of "gags" verbal and visual, as the pathetic beauty of the sunset in the big city urban

Cameron Diaz jumps to the big screen, who is making her first film performing the role of Tina Carlyle. And also this movie allows the appearance of Carrey.

The narrative Context



           Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) is a banker that have a lot of insecurities to face either the abuses of his boss, face the girls that he desire…until he finds a mysterious mask which when he puts he changes his personality drastically; he becomes a crazy man that is the opposite of the original personality of Stanley. This Situation helps him to love Tina Carlyle (Cameron Díaz), and face her boyfriend Dorian Tyrell (Peter Greene); a dangerous criminal chief of a Band.

           The Film was launched on 1994 a year when the beginnings of the Capitalism and Neo-liberalism were supported by the United States, the cold war was finished, Oriental Germany became capitalist, and many countries of Latin America, Asia, and Europe imported the culture of United States in their way of dress, tv programs, commercial products, and stereotypes.
          The Mask Portrays the internal conflict of a man (Stanley Ipkiss) that is insecure and coward, but he changes with the help of the Mask, becomes brave, decided and gets the girl (Tina Carlyle).
           He is not much rich, and not much respected by a society that values the economic position, the well dress appearance, and a good job.
